Body positive, or body positivity , is a trend that has recently become more and more popular. This is a kind of opposition to unrealistic models of appearance and beauty, which are promoted primarily in the media. Body positive is nothing more than accepting the body as it is, regardless of its appearance or size.

    The Body Positive movement

A beautiful and young body is a dream of many of us. Unfortunately, ideals do not exist and even the most attractive people struggle with many physical shortcomings. Cellulite, skin discoloration, excess kilograms or other imperfections should never be a reason to be ashamed – after all, it is not the body that defines what kind of people we are, but character and intellect. This approach promotes the body positive movement, which has been heard many times in the last few years. Although it was launched over 20 years ago, it has only recently taken over social media, breaking stereotypes and the canons of beauty that have prevailed for over a dozen years.

The canons of beauty and Body Positivity

While it may seem like being body positive is nothing difficult, for many people it is not so obvious. If all our lives we are bombarded with images of beauty from all sides – photos of perfect models who are slim and young, it can be very difficult for us to stop taking them for inspiration overnight. Dreams of a beautiful body are very often anchored deep in our head, which is why self-acceptance is not so easy. When looking at the perfect model or model, we see that we are missing something, which is why we never really feel at ease.

This is why it is so important to understand exactly what the Body Positivity movement is. It is primarily an incentive to change the way you think about yourself and your body, as well as to develop a sense of self-esteem that leads to self-acceptance and reconciliation with your own imperfections.

    Body Positivity is acceptance

The Body Positivity movement does not promote what we should look like. Rather, it is about accepting your body and the changes it undergoes throughout our lives. Many such changes are still taboo in our society, for example, little is said about the imperfections of the body that women face after childbirth. This is a very important problem that affects many people of all ages each year. Lack of adequate support from others or the inability to accept oneself in a new, worse form, can lead to mental problems and even depression.

    Body Positivity in social media

Social media, especially Instagram, very often create trends that can be a source of complexes for followers. Beautiful frames, perfect views, young bodies … who wouldn’t be jealous of us? However, we should realize that not all of the perfect photos we see online were created just like that without effort. Publishing photos on the web is a daily work and a way of life for many people, and the wonderful images we see are often retouched and differ from reality.

If browsing influencer accounts evokes negative emotions in you and makes you complex, remember that you do not have to do this. The choice of profiles to follow is really wide, and the hashtag #bodypositive, under which we can find photos promoting body positivity, can also become a source of inspiration – not to pursue unsurpassed ideals, but to full self-acceptance.

    Problems with self-acceptance

None of us are perfect, so it is worth accepting your body. Of course, there are many ways to make us look and feel better, such as regular exercise or proper skin care, which we should not give up. After all, body positivity is about being natural, not neglected. If, despite your best efforts, you find it hard to accept what you look like and your pursuit of excellence is an ongoing obsession that you can’t overcome, you may need specialist help. Conversation with a psychologist will certainly not hurt you, on the contrary – it will allow you to look at yourself from a distance and teach you to feel good in your body.
