What are the types of neurotic disorders? What is their treatment like?
Neurotic disorders come in various forms, but most of them have one common denominator – psychosomatic ailments. Neurotic disorders result mainly from distorted perception of oneself, the environment and unfavorable beliefs that cause fear. Therefore, their treatment is carried out primarily on the basis of cognitive-behavioral therapy.
Among the neuroses, the most famous are anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorders (the so-called obsessive compulsive disorder).
Anxiety disorders come in several forms, the most common of which are:
- phobia (specific, social or agoraphobia),
- generalized anxiety,
- anxiety with panic attacks, the so-called anxiety neurosis.
These disorders are accompanied by severe anxiety, restlessness and anxiety. Depending on the type of disorder, these emotions may be episodic and sudden, or persist all the time.
They are always accompanied by somatic symptoms such as increased heart rate, shortness of breath, tightness in the chest and sweating. There may also be a lump in the throat, dizziness, trembling voice or flushing (the so-called flush on the face).
In turn, obsessive-compulsive disorders are associated with recurring, intrusive thoughts and / or the need to perform certain activities, e.g. checking several times whether the door is definitely closed. Importantly, these are thoughts and behaviors that disturb the sick person, but he cannot control them.
Compulsive actions are actually unwanted and forced (“This is stronger than me”). The patient feels relieved and guilty at the same time.
The other neurotic disorders are:
- neurasthenia,
- depersonalization.
People suffering from neurosis are often aware of the presence of the problem. The exception may be, for example, people with social phobia. They often treat their symptoms and behaviors as being inherent in their nature. The treatment of neurosis always requires the patient’s full consent, commitment and willingness.
How to cure neurosis?
The treatment of neurosis consists primarily in participation in psychotherapy. The use of medications is most often recommended to relieve symptoms such as constant tension or panic attacks. However, they do not change the patient’s thinking and perception, so they cannot be the main treatment method in people whose main problem is neurosis. Treatment is primarily based on cognitive behavioral therapy.
Its effectiveness in treating these disorders has been scientifically proven. The task of the therapeutic process is to discover harmful beliefs (often unconscious) and transform them into supportive ones.
In anxiety neurosis, various methods are also applied to get used to the cause of anxiety. The most popular is the so-called exposure, that is, contact with a factor that causes anxiety. In safe conditions, the patient gradually gets used to this stimulus and becomes convinced that nothing is threatening him.
Fears are very often exaggerated and distorted in patients suffering from anxiety neurosis. Treatment with cognitive behavioral therapy also allows you to realistically look at your thoughts, behaviors and situations. The patient is faced with the facts, thanks to which he can cope with situations of fear and anxiety.
